270th Anniversary of Lomonosov Moscow State University
On January 25, 2025, the oldest Russian university, Moscow State University, celebrates its 270th anniversary.
It was founded on January 12 (Old Style) or January 25 (New Style), 1755 on St. Tatiana's Day by Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. Moscow State University bears the name of a great Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov who stood at the origins of its establishment. Currently, the day of the University's foundation is celebrated in Russia as Student's Day.
Moscow State University has an old academic tradition. Multiple scientific communities and schools have been established on its basis. The list of its graduates includes world-famous scientists and Nobel Prize winners, such as writer and poet Boris Pasternak, theoretical physicist Lev Landau and the father of the hydrogen bomb Andrei Sakharov.
Today, Moscow State University provides educational programs for about 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students and employs over 8,500 lecturers, professors and researchers. The University is also home to 8,000 international students from more than 80 countries from all over the world.
